Samsung Shows 57-Inch LCD
Samsung Electronics has developed a 57-inch liquid crystal display panel, the largest such panel in the world, the company said Thursday. The panel was produced on the company's new fifth-generation TFT LCD production line that began operation in September this year. The maximum size panel that can be manufactured is governed by the size of glass sheet that a production line can handle. Fifth-generation lines can accept glass up to 110 centimeters by 130 centimeters (43.3 inches by 51.2 inches), making the 57-inch panel possible, said Samsung.

Casio using a-Si for OLED displays
Casio has used amorphous silicon (a-Si) technology to produce an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display at 30% lower production costs than required by LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) OLEDs, the Nikkei Sangyo Shimbun reported yesterday. The company has conducted test production of a 2.1-inch, 260,000-color active-matrix (AM) OLED panel of 160W128-pixel resolution and only 1.2mm thickness. It plans to launch large-size OLED TVs in 2006 or 2007.

ABO aims to out-compress JPEG
A Singapore company claims to have developed a technique of compressing files far smaller than what conventional methods can achieve and what's more, to do it without losing information. The method, dubbed Adaptive Binary Optimization (ABO), can help hospitals compress and manage medical images, aid film distributors archive and transmit movies and even make faxes and scans smaller for faster travel across networks, claim its makers.

PC4000 HyperX Examined
While RST Pro2 testing the Extended and Base memory we found that after 5 loops on each set of modules that no errors were found! Memtest86 was used and again confirmed these results. No issues with either the Hynix or Samsung IC's used on the Kingston HyperX PC4000 memory were found during stability testing at all.

Opteron 248 Review
The results of the 32-bit tests show the great potential of the Opterons - except the problem of overheating mentioned above all tests ran very stable. While the Athlon MP tried to catch up to the Intel XEON the Opteron sets a new point of reference unreachable even by the flagship XEON 3.2 GHz with L3 cache. On the other hand the tested XEON 2.8 GHz was a good competitor and a switch from a XEON 2.8 GHz to an Opteron 248 would make no sense at this time.
