At first it may seem that rendering out a number of passes like this is pointless, you could make all of these changes in the 3D program and render just once; ultimatly however, I feel that the instant feedback one gets in Photoshop by pulling a slider and seeing how that effects the image is worth the extra trouble of rendering in iterations.
Furthermore, you can achieve effects in Photoshop that would be difficult or impossible to achieve normally.
For instance, Pearls have a very diffused reflections, and 3DS Max has no capacity to do blurred reflections.
Thus, I made a new layer in Photoshop in which the pearls were isolated, and then applied a gausian blur. Note that I had to preserve the edges of the pearls to prevent them from blurring into each other; I achieved by masking the blurred layer with an iteration rendered with a falloff map.
Finally, I created specular bloom; this is the effect in which the brightest parts of an image appear to have a small glowing halo. This was achieved by making a duplicate layer in Photoshop, greatly increasing its levels such that it was almost entirely black, with a few bright patches. I then used the "maximum" filter to increase the size of these light areas, blurred the image considerably, and combined it with the original image in "screen" mode.
Well, thats about it...hopefully this hasnt been too dull and technical, and hopefully
someone finds this all useful.
The final image is shown below as a wireframe and full rendered.
