Turbo Squid Releases Kaydara's HumanIK
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Thu Mar 20 2003
New Orleans, LA - March 20, 2003 - Turbo Squid, the world's fastest growing online digital marketplace, today announced another offering under the Discreet Certified 3ds max(tm) Plug-in Program. Kaydara's HumanIK plug-in for Discreet 3ds max software is now available for purchase through Turbo Squid's worldwide reseller channel.

"HumanIK is an outstanding character animation plug-in for 3ds max," notes Turbo Squid's Chief Technology Officer, Matt Wisdom. "It offers a great degree of control and ease of use. Among the many benefits of HumanIK is that users will now be able to integrate Kaydara's method of handling motion capture files seamlessly with 3ds max. We're excited to add this plug-in to our online offerings."

Built on MOTIONBUILDER's production-proven technology, Kaydara's HumanIK gives 3ds max users greater control over their complex character animation projects. Feature highlights in HumanIK include:

Automatic Character Rigging - saves animators a significant amount of time when compared to manual rigging. Motion retargeting between HumanIK-based characters is simplified and allows animators to use diverse motion data in one, unified animation environment.

BodyGenerator - provides a powerful 3ds max script for the quick creation of human bone structures.

User Interface - is easily accessible and fully customizable.

Seamless Integration with the 3ds max environment - provides full support for all bone and object structures native to 3ds max software. Animators also benefit from compatibility with the 3ds max controller for procedural animations and function curves. Full access to MAXScript means tools can be easily customized. HumanIK also works in parallel with character studio software, complementing the Physique and Crowd components.

Finally, HumanIK includes support for all major motion capture formats (.bvh, .htr, .asf, .fbx). Consequently, users now have direct access to all of these file formats directly within the 3ds max environment, providing them with a start-to-finish pipeline until now unavailable in 3ds max.

"Previously, Kaydara MOTIONBUILDER users who also used 3ds max in their pipeline needed to go out of the 3ds max environment to take advantage of MOTIONBUILDER tools," says Jean-Jacques Hermans, vice president of marketing and business development for Kaydara. "Now with HumanIK, customers using both Discreet and Kaydara technologies in their pipeline can do so without leaving the 3ds max environment."

Hermans noted that customer requests led to Kaydara's creation of HumanIK: "They have been asking us to port Kaydara's advanced character animation technology to the 3ds max platform," he said. "We put a strong research and development team on the task and we're proud to say that HumanIK is the solution they sought."

HumanIK natively supports Kaydara's FBX file interchange format, a format for 3D data that allows MOTIONBUILDER users to quickly and easily acquire and exchange 3D assets and media from a wide variety of sources. HumanIK allows for direct import of mocap files through the FBX format, thus allowing animators to concentrate on the aesthetics of their creation's motion.

Pricing and availability

HumanIK has a suggested retail price (SRP) in North America of US $995, with an introductory special of $895 for a limited time. HumanIK is available from Turbo Squid at www.turbosquid.com/dcpstore, from Discreet at http://www.discreet.com/products/3dsmax/dcp, or from authorized Resellers around the world.
