Discreet to Support SGI Tezro Visual Workstations
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Wed Jul 16 2003
Montreal, QC -- Jul. 16, 2003 -- Discreet announced that it plans to support the recently announced Silicon Graphics Tezro visual workstation for upcoming releases of flame and flint visual effects systems, its smoke(R) non-linear editing and finishing systems, and the backdraft media management and background I/O system.

The Silicon Graphics Tezro workstation is designed to eliminate many of the bottlenecks inherent to typical digital video systems by allowing data to be transferred between the various components at much higher rates. It incorporates the bandwidth and capabilities for real-time data transfers of greater than 2K resolution as well as the integrated ability to handle high quality video I/O and graphics.

"The new Silicon Graphics Tezro workstations represent the state-of-the-art in visual computing," commented Martin Vann, vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at Discreet. "The introduction of this new hardware will bring immediate benefit to Discreet applications by delivering the most advanced multi-processor workstations available today. The level of performance delivered at the price, plus its HD capabilities will be extremely compelling and beneficial to the digital media industry."

The new Tezro workstation features a scalable architecture with configurations ranging from one to four 64-bit RISC processors per workstation, up to seven integrated PCI-X slots and 8 DIMM sockets for up to 8GB of memory. Of key significance to the digital media industry is the high-speed internal bus bandwidth that provides data rates that are up to 60 percent faster than on the Silicon Graphics Octane2(TM) workstation. The Tezro workstation also incorporates powerful SGI VPro(TM) V12 graphics and the 10-bit DMediaPro(TM) HD/SD video I/O subsystem.

The high bandwidth and advanced VPro graphics of the Tezro workstation can deliver up to two real-time streams of uncompressed HDTV (1080i and 1080/24p) at 10-bit/component with superior 4:4:4 (RGB) sampling as well playback at 2K or higher resolutions making it one of the highest performing online workstations for high quality HDTV and film post-production.

"For mission-critical post-production, system bandwidth is the key enabling factor," explains Marc Petit, vice president of systems engineering at Discreet. "The beauty of the Tezro is that it delivers a level of overall throughput that--combined with Discreet's expertise in software optimization--ensures that our post-production systems continue to lead the industry, both in terms of performance and in the creative tools we develop. Discreet's systems on the Tezro offer a higher level of interactivity and responsiveness compared to other systems on the market."

Pricing and availability

The first public demonstration of flame on the new Silicon Graphics Tezro workstation will be at SIGGRAPH, July 29-31 in the San Diego Convention Center; inquire at Discreet booth #2836. Discreet and Silicon Graphics will also showcase flame and smoke on the Tezro workstation along with other strategic initiatives on August 21st at Cinespace in Hollywood, California.
