SGI joins Discreet Sparks program to bring SAN solutions. Posted by: amigo Source: Press Release Date: Mon Aug 18 2003 Mountain View, CA & Montreal, QC - Aug. 18, 2003 - Silicon Graphics, Inc. and Discreet, a division of Autodesk, Inc. today announced that SGI formally joined Discreet's infrastructure sparks partner program. As part of the agreement, Discreet and SGI are qualifying key elements of the SGI InfiniteStructure solution, including the SGI SAN Server family and SGI CXFS shared file system, to work with Discreet's systems and software product lines.
"We are very excited about this new collaboration between Discreet and SGI," said Phil Mendelson, Senior Vice President of Engineering at Ascent Media's Creative Services, one of Discreet's largest systems customers in the world. "As we move more of our workflow to file-based and networked architectures, we want the ability to have only one copy of our content, and to share access to it, from any platform we choose. The SGI CXFS shared filesystem enables us to do that, facilitating access to data from IRIX, Windows, Linux, and Mac hosts as though it were on local storage. This is a cost effective advantage, in terms of storage, bandwidth, and workflow."
Discreet, working with SGI, will resell SGI(R) SAN solutions worldwide as an integral part of its high-performance infrastructure products designed to target a growing demand for robust, highly scalable shared storage environments. This demand is fueled by the increasing complexity of modern post-production projects combined with the rapid transition to high-resolution digital film and television formats including the emerging digital intermediate market.
"Providing a data management infrastructure that is reliable, flexible and scalable, the SGI InfiniteStructure solution can improve workflow, accelerate project completion and provide a digital infrastructure that will seamlessly grow to accommodate future business needs of Discreet clients," said Chris Golson, senior director, Media Industries, SGI. "The solution enables facilities to manage multiple jobs, across all the workstations and operating systems in their facilities and most importantly, optimizes the time of their creative talent."
The InfiniteStructure solution provides one of the most massively scalable, highest performing shared storage architectures available to the digital media industry today. The SGI CXFS file system provides the potential to store up to 18 exabytes (18 million terabytes) of data, the equivalent of over 9 million high-resolution 2K feature films, while the SAN can be configured to provide as much as 12GB-per-second aggregate bandwidth, the equivalent of 32 10-bit 2K film data streams. As a result, InfiniteStructure systems also provide a unique high-performance shared storage environment for Discreet's real-time lustre(TM) digital film color grading system.
"The extension of our relationship with SGI represents a significant advance in Discreet's ability to deliver high-performance, open infrastructure solutions that drive client value for high-end film and HD workflows," said Martin Vann, vice president of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for Discreet. "Together, we'll provide a multiplatform, multi-OS solution that offers unparalleled flexibility by bypassing the proprietary barriers and performance limitations of the vendor-specific SAN solutions currently used in post-production and broadcast."
The SGI InfiniteStructure environment enables high-speed sharing of media assets between IRIX(R), Linux(R) and Windows(R)OS-based workstations connected directly to the SGI SAN Server family. Mac OS(R) X clients are currently supported via file serving with a direct Fibre Channel access option available later this year. The extreme openness of the CXFS file system provides applications running on a wide range of operating systems with instant, shared access to files and reduces costly and time-consuming copying of data from one file system to another.
CXFS shared filesystem provides the cross-platform capabilities that can serve data efficiently not only to real-time creative systems like lustre, but also to large-scale, multi-seat software environments such as 3ds max(R) and combustion(R) software. Discreet also plans to add standard file support to future versions of its inferno(R), flame(R), flint(R), fire(R) and smoke(R) products, enabling them to read and write data directly to the SGI CXFS file system.
Discreet and SGI will debut the InfiniteStructure solution in the SGI Mobile Innovation Center as part of the Discreet Demofest in Hollywood, California, on August 21, 2003. The Demofest event will feature in-depth demonstrations of Discreet lustre, as well as smoke and flame on the new Silicon Graphics(R) Tezro(TM) visual workstation. The InfiniteStructure solution will make its European debut at the International Broadcasters Conference in Amsterdam, September 12-16, 2003 in the SGI Stand 7.531 and Discreet Stand 7.421.
