This was posted on the Discreet Support forum by an official of Discreet (Phil Miller), so we can all assume it's for real and it's not a joke (yes get your wallets ready folks):

Max5 will include printed manuals - just not all of them.

Inside each box (new or upgrade) of max5 will be printed versions of the Tutorials, the Reactor manual, and a full-color and highly-illustrated New Features guide.

With max5, the user reference (the hefty 3 volume set) grew too large for the physical box (both in size and weight) at a time when we were finding less and less people using them as their content was/is identical to the on-line help. We also found an ever growing majority of people using on-line help has the first, if not only source or reference material, as systems have improved *so* much over the last few years an finding information is usually quicker - and in color.

But, unlike other companies, we do recognize the value printed manuals bring for certain individuals or situations and so are making them available at our cost for those that need them.

...so I wonder, were Softimage, Alias|Wavefront, Side Effects stupid to print their manuals all these years, and have a nice and large package included. Heck when you pay $4-5,000 at least you see some value in it (since cd's are insignificantly smaller). And then someone else's comment was:

"If Discreet's accounting department is listening, they may want to design a box roughly the size of a jewel case for the next release and order them all before the product is created....save LOTS of money."

...and now you have to pay extra $100 for a set of printed manuals that you should get for free when you pay $4,000 for an application.
It seems to me the only happy party here will be the software pirates who can't wait to now distribute the full package (software + manuals) in one nice bundled ISO. Great job Discreet...
