Discreet to Demo New OpenFlight Technology
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Mon Dec 01 2003
Orlando, FL - Dec. 01, 2003 - Discreet, a division of Autodesk, Inc. in concert with Terrain Experts, Inc, a provider of terrain database creation tools for the Visual Simulation market, plans to promote the use of 3ds max 6, its professional 3D modeling, rendering and animation software, within the Visual Simulation community by developing new OpenFlight-based plug-ins to further the integration between their respective products.

Discreet and Terrain Experts, along with co-development partner Bluerock Technologies, will demonstrate technology that can be used within 3ds max 6 software to load OpenFlight data exported from Terrain Experts' TerraVista product, modify visual elements or attributes of the scene graph and export
the data back to OpenFlight while retaining the original structure and parameters of the OpenFlight data. Bluerock, using technology licensed from Terrex and technical support from Discreet, will develop and release this solution as a product in early 2004. Pricing and availability are not yet announced.

"Discreet 3ds max software is a favored solution for Visual Simulation artists," said Chris Ford, product line manager, Discreet Animation. "It's well known that the polygonal modeling tools in 3ds max are the best in the industry. We've been listening to our customers in the Visual Simulation community who've asked us to fully unleash the power of the tools that have made Discreet 3ds max number one in the game industry and elsewhere. By partnering with Bluerock and Terrain Experts, we will now have a solution that simplifies editing OpenFlight data and maximizes the productivity and global popularity of 3ds max"

This announcement builds on Discreet's efforts with 3ds max 6 software to provide full OpenFlight support directly in the box using the PolyTrans plug-in from Okino Computer Graphics. While the PolyTrans plug-in provides free import and export of OpenFlight data in 3ds max 6, it is intended for use by Film and Video Effects artists to translate OpenFlight data into a form specific for those purposes which permanently modifies the original OpenFlight structure in the process. Since the organization and attributes of an OpenFlight file are of primary importance to a Visual Simulation artist-any unexpected side-effects when importing and exporting OpenFlight data can create problems.

All existing 3D animation and translation tools can create unexpected side effects when working with OpenFlight data, causing time-consuming rework and limited use for Visual Simulation. Bluerock Technologies, in conjunction with Terrain Experts and Discreet have addressed the key problems of preserving original OpenFlight structures and attributes, while allowing Visual Simulation artists to edit or create new 3D elements that can be placed directly in a scene. Significantly, most of the OpenFlight attributes are now directly editable within 3ds max-greatly simplifying work flow.

The partnership formed by Discreet, Terrain Experts and Bluerock Technologies will continue collaborating on solutions to leverage the incredible array of professional 3ds max product features used by interactive game and visual effects artists to create the most compelling content possible. Features including automatic Level of Detail (LOD) creation, texture baking, vertex painting, normal map creation and Global Illumination can be brought together to greatly enhance the realism and performance of any OpenFlight database. To see this technology in action, visit Discreet (Booth #351) or Terrain Experts (Booth#506).

3ds max 6 is available for worldwide shipment at US $3,495. For more sales and product information, contact a Discreet Authorized Reseller at www.discreet.com/resellers.
