I built the pocket watch and candlestick simply from modified primitives. The pocket watch is strongly blurred in the final image, nonetheless I modeled it with a fair amount of detail including a chain made from an array of simple toruses. I made the chain appear to bend by collapsing all of the toruses into a single mesh and then applying a path deform modifier.

I hope what I have written is of some use to someone. Perhaps the best general advice I could give would be to practice, to look carefully at your work, the work of others, and at nature. Fundamentally the most important skill of an artist is a good eye.
The final image is shown below as a wireframe and full rendered.
