FAQ

A FAQ is a Frequently Asked Question guide. A FAQ is usually created so people who have more important things to do dont have to answer the same question over and over again.

What is the purpose of this FAQ?
This FAQ is designed to answer common hardware questions users experience using and running 3D Studio Max.

Is there a printable version of this FAQ?
Yes. Go to File-Page Setup. Choose landscape. Go to File-Print. Click Ok. You'll then print the current FAQ page.

A. Video Card Questions

What is a good video card for 3dsmax?
Any video card designed around OpenGL acceleration is usually a good choice for 3dsmax. 3dlabs, ATI, and Nvidia all produce quality OpenGL accelerators and/or chipsets. The latest top of the line OpenGL accelerators from each company are as follows(As of November 5th, 2002)

3dlabs: The Wildcat IV 7210, and Wildcat VP970
ATI: The FireGL4, FireGL 8800, and FireGL X1
Nvidia: The Quadro 900XL, and Eclipse.

These accelerators carry a hefty price tag, but when your clients are pounding down your door, there isn't anything less you'd want on your side.

I dont have much money. Do you have a cheap graphics card recommendation for 3dsmax?

The Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti 4200 is quite possibly the best Max card for less than 150 USD. Not only does it have Twinview support (Dualhead), but also supports many of the new d3d features found in max5, and is mighty quick in both Opengl and Direct3d.

There are a few variants of the Ti 4200. Various manufacturers have tweaked and modified these inexpensive cards to produce extremely powerful variants, some of which even outperform their faster brethren, the Ti 4400 and in some cases even the Ti 4600.

Heres a quick overview of Geforce 4 Ti clock speeds.

Geforce 4 Ti 4200 (250 Core, 444-500 Ram)
Geforce 4 Ti 4400 (275 Core, 550-600 Ram)
Geforce 4 Ti 4600 (300 Core, 650-700 Ram)

There is also another version of the Geforce 4, know as the Geforce 4MX. This card is not mentioned here, because it is not suitable for application work.
It shares very little of the technology showcased in the Ti series, and is substantially slower with greatly reduced bandwidth and abilities.
