"Black Gold" was the perfect contest topic because I had already created a refinery image before (however not as detailed and complex as this one) and I really have fun creating scenes of this kind.
I had already downloaded some refinery photos from the internet and downloaded even more for this image.
My favorite place to look for pictures is www.corbis.com. The first picture that inspired me was this one:
But I didn't like the arrangement of the parts much. It doesn't really have depth. And also the lighting isn't really interesting. I liked the look of this image better:
