Faking SSS with Mental Ray
Added on: Sun Nov 23 2003
Page: 2 3 4 5 6

(Based on a tutorial written for Maya by Gerald Naujoks, www.motiondesign.biz)

Hello there! In this tutorial were going to make a "simple" Sub Surface Scattering effect, to use for smoked glass, or simple wax. Were going to use the Mental Ray render that comes with max 6, where we go by the concept of smoke in a glass.

Since this tutorial is a direct translation from the original tutorial Ill be using the original settings, and I wont be able to explain what all the options were going to (and not going to) use is for...This tutorial can be used by all people, from newbies to advanced users.

If youre looking for a way to make SSS effects on human skin, either use a true SSS render, like Brazil R/S or Vray, or take a look at the skin material tutorial that ships with 3ds max.

Making the test model

First well start with making a testmodel for our SSS material(This is VERY basic!).

1. Make a Geosphere, around 40 in size, and 3 in Iteration (Seams like the SSS effect depends on model size).

2. Convert to Editable poly, select all faces, and press the small button right up to the bevel button in the Modify panel, under the Edit Polygons rollout.
Select the By Polygon option in the small window that opens, and adjust the spinners so you get a result just alittle close to whats on the picture:
