Sony's New Humanoid Robot SDR-4X II
Sony introduces at the Robodex 2003 it's new version of the humanoid Robot SDR-4X. The new version SDR-4X II has improved movement functions, safety functions and conversation capabilities. The new speech processor supports continuous speech recognition with about 20,000 words. The Sony SDR-4X II is about 580x190x270mm in size and weighs about 7kg. If you want one of these little guys to entertain your next party expect to pay a price tag equal to that of a luxury car!! I think "Micro" Rosie can wait a few more years. =)

AMD claims Intel cause system crashes
Chip firm AMD has quietly dissed its much bigger competitor Intel by claiming that the latter's 845G/GL chipset crashes peoples' machines. According to a competitive notice on its website, aimed at its resellers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Intel's "extreme graphics" technology "struggles and even fails" to run some popular software packages.

400MHz FSB Athlon XP launch in April/May
Japanese Web site PC Watch has posted what it claims is the latest iteration of AMD's roadmap. Essentially, AMD will launch the Barton-based Athlon XP with 512KB of L2 cache and a 400MHz FSB late April/early May. Performance ratings will range to at least 3200+. AMD has already announced it will launch the 64-bit Opteron (aka Sledgehammer on 22 April). Barton-based uni- and dual-processor Athlon MPs will a appear sooner: we should see them before the end of March, the roadmap suggests.

DirectX 9.0a download
A new DirectX 9.0a End-User Runtime download has appeared on the Microsoft website. This updated version resolves an issue with DirectX 9.0 where some multiplayer games or MSN Messenger may not work correctly. A number of minor bugs were also resolved.

MS told to drop 'misleading' ad
Microsoft claimed in an advertisement that its software is so secure, it will make hackers extinct. As it turned out, it was the ad which bit the dust. This controversial advertisement, which was published in the November issue of Time magazine and tech digest ITWeb Brainstorm, featured three extinct animals--a dodo, a woolly mammoth and a saber-tooth tiger--as well as a caricature of a hacker.

Best AMD XP for Overclocking
Make sure you have AMD Athlon XP Thoroughbred processor with B0 core stepping. To determine it, check the CPU ID of your chip with appropriate software, such as WCPUID by H. Oda. If the CPU ID is 681, then you have the Athlon XP processor based on the Thoroughbred B0 core. If it is not, it means you have something else. The information below seems to be correct only for AMD Athlon XP Thoroughbred processors with B0 core stepping. Note that microprocessors based on Palomino core or Thoroughbred A0 core are rather poor for overclocking.

Via's KT400A Has No Support for 400 FSB Bartons
[I]Following the recent launch of its K7-based KT400A chipset, VIA is planning to release one more product, the KT600, for the AMD platform in May. According to sources, the KT600 (codenamed KT400A-CE) is pin-to-pin compatible with the KT400A (codenamed KT400A-CD), but is designed to support a 400MHz FSB. The KT400A only supports a 333MHz FSB.[/I]
