Techbits

Greg
Techbits are a brain child of Greg Hess, who initially started them on the Discreet Forum, then moved them here to a permanent home; they are gathered, (chewed up) and processed by Greg Hess and Thomas Bruno, an all around good guys, hardware experts and 3DLuVr staff/contributing authors.

As promised ATI today launched its R300 product line with ATI Radeon 9700 card (110 million transistors) as well as a new budget card Radeon 9000 (Pro). Although the cards are priced to perform against NVIDIA's GeForce4 MX line, their performance is more in line with the GeForce4 Ti4200 card. The Radeon 9000 cards feature a complete implementation of DirectX 8.1 as well as full vertex and pixel shader support. The Radeon 9700 will be in stores no later than 30-days from now. The card retails for a MSRP of $399 and with all that ATI has been able to show us that far, we have no reason not to believe them on this. The estimated street cost for a Radeon 9000 is $109 where the Radeon 9000 Pro is $129.

Chip performance could be doubled thanks to new breakthrough - The Oxford researchers, working for Automatic Parallel Designs, claim they can achieve this while utilising less die area and also say better power efficiency would result through using the new findings to re-design math circuitry (about 50% more energy efficiency than 0.13 micron technology according to the researchers). AutoPD also claim to be working with a major CPU manufacturer on a new floating point multiplier and the findings could influence chip makers in many areas including processor and DSP technology. The algorithms are also being considered by at least two other processor makers according to recent reports.
